To work alongside the Directors to provide a child-centred environment where the children are cared for in a safe, loving and stimulating way. To ensure all children are safeguarded and their welfare and safety is promoted. To deliver and ensure a high standard of learning, development and care for children aged 3 months-11 years. Working in partnership with parents/carers, Directors and the whole team. To play a key role in promoting and ensuring “best practice” is followed in line with the Pennies Operating procedures and standards and the EYFS. Supervision of and support to team members within the nursery, thereby implementing high standards of quality practices alongside Pennies values and beliefs.
To work 3 or 4 days per week, opposite shifts to the other manager.

Main duties
- To promote the aims and objectives of the nursery
- To promote the high standards of the nursery at all times to parents, staff and visitors
- To ensure the provision of high standards of physical, personal, social and emotional care
- To spearhead the nursery safeguarding procedures to ensure all children are kept safe, well and secure and ensure all team members are able to do the same
- To understand the requirements under the Prevent Duty and ensure it is incorporated into the setting. Make sure staff are made aware of this and any action that is required is taken promptly
- To lead a team of professional workers and to ensure good practice at all times, this involves leading from the floor as well as office based
- To calculate annual leave for all staff (including term time, Bank and zero hour contacted staff) using the Pennies annual leave formula
- To notify the finance team with staff annual leave payments for leavers, zero hour contracted staff and bank staff
- To plan and organise staffing schedules and holiday rotas to ensure adequate staffing levels are maintained in accordance with Ofsted
- To ensure a DSL is on site during the hours of 7.30am-6.30pm, if this is not possible a Director must be informed
- To be aware of and act in accordance with current legislation, good practice, Pennies policies and procedures
- The day-to-day management of the nursery including quality improvement, staffing and barriers for learning opportunities are maximised
- To deploy staff effectively and always have an understanding of the staff and children in the setting.
- To have a ‘hands on approach’ when managing and supervising staff. This will include working on the floor to support staff.
- Ensure regular communication and interaction with parents regarding their child’s progress and development within the nursery has a blended approach of face to face and via Pennies online systems
- Ensure that communications with the staff has a blended approach of face to face and via written formats
- Implement and monitor an effective Key Person system
- To ensure records are maintained and kept up to date in accordance with legislation and Pennies policies and procedures.
- To appoint staff in roles that are suitable for their skills, experience and qualifications.
- To provide advice for both staff and parents on any special educational needs or progress gaps that may arise for children within the nursery and to liaise with the relevant parents/carers and professionals.
- To review policies and procedures and risk assessment annually or as and when necessary.
- To actively be involved in planning and participate in open days/evenings, recruitment evenings and any other events that promote the nursery, partnership with parents and staff recruitment.
- Ensure staff have the necessary, and up to date training to carry out their role.
- To adhere to, and support all team members to understand and follow, the legal requirements of Early Years Foundation Stage and Pennies expectations, policies and procedures, values and beliefs
- Carry out yearly competency framework appraisals, staff supervisions and 1-1’s in a timely manner
- To provide staff with a blank competency framework in a timely manor
- Be aware of and support staff’s well-being
- To follow and support staff to understand and implement the Early Years Foundation Stage
- To keep up to date with current issues/changes in the Early years and share these with your team
- To follow the Local Authorities procedure when applying for government funding
- Any funding received to support SEND children must be correlated with the amount received
- All applied for and received Local Authority funding must be accounted for by yourself and the finance manager
- To follow all relevant Acts including the Equality Act 2010, the Data Protection Act 2018 and the General Data Protection Regulation (regulation (EU) 2016/ 679) (GDPR) that relate to staff employment and record keeping
- To be responsible for all nursery staff, cooks, students and voluntary workers. Supervising and supporting all members of the nursery team in their day-to-day duties including recruitment and induction, appraisals and reviews, training and development, individual supervisions and discipline
- To be responsible for ensuring the nursery is cleaned to a high standard by external providers, including reporting any failures to meet our standards to the provider.
- To ensure any external companies and visitors are vetting appropriately to meet safeguarding practices
- Ensuring that all staff have an up-to-date Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks
- Follow the robust Pennies recruitment procedure
- To promote staff retention
- Supporting all team members to work in partnership with parents/carers and other family members
- Liaising with Ofsted and other professional bodies associated with the nursery
- Overseeing the efficient upkeep and maintenance of the building and grounds, stock of equipment, furnishings and fittings and report concerns to the directors.
- Being responsible for all administrative duties associated with the management of the facility, e.g. maintaining records on the children and their families, ordering equipment, maintaining an inventory, keeping personnel records
- Be responsible for the petty cash budget
- Co-ordinating and chairing staff meetings and room meetings as appropriate including agendas and minutes
- Establishing and maintaining effective communication links with other agencies
- Support the marketing team with advertising the nursery
- To instigate the development and implementation of systems to monitor and record child development, ensuring this is done in a timely manner across the board.
- To be responsible for the overall health and safety standards within the nursery and ensuring staff compliance and awareness, including training where appropriate
- To oversee that the agreed high standards of hygiene and cleanliness are maintained at all times
- To ensure the provision of a high-quality environment to meet the needs of individual children regardless of any disabilities, family backgrounds or medical history
- To provide all team members with the support and resources required for the early identification and intervention for children with possible special needs
- To undertake such other duties and responsibilities of an equivalent nature as may be determined from time-to-time by the Director / Head of Operations
- To ensure that the staff team are working to their full potential and implement support programmes and training according to individual needs to achieve this
- To work as part of a team and action Director and Head of Operations requests and decisions made during company meetings

- To positively promote company initiatives and embed and communicate these within the nursery
- To positively promote company events to the staff team
- Manage shifts and step in when required to carry out roles that are needed to keep the service running to a high standard

Qualifications, Training and experience
- The job holder must hold a childcare NNEB,NVQ level 3 or equivalent) or Early years teaching qualification
- Must be able to make decisions on their own and use their own initiative
- Must be able to work as part of a team and under pressure
- Must have at least 2 years supervisory/management experience
- Must have an understanding of child care and development and the EYFS
- The role requires good management and communication skills
- The roles requires you to work on the floor to support staff and cover in busy times
- Must have organisational skills, and be able to plan and budget
- Must be PC literate
- A good working knowledge of the Children Act 1989 and Local Authority Regulations of day care provision
- The job holder will be required to complete training to maintain Pennies standards and to maintain their own CPD
